With Davis Webb and Chad Hansen out for the next two days, Cal had to give reps to some of the younger guys, namely Chase Forrest and Ross Bowers at the quarterback position, possibly to determine a clear backup for Webb if for some reason he is unable to go next week.

Notes from today
- With Forrest and Bowers competing for the backup job, it's good to remember that this is essentially an audition for what's to come next spring. Forrest probably would have starting now had Webb not come, but Bowers has improved mightily during the fall to get up to the level that Forrest is at.
-With that being said, there didn't appear to be separation between the two of them today. It wasn't a long practice by design, and above all else, there was a lot of timing being worked with routes. Forrest has the better footwork at this point, having studied behind Jared over the previous two years. Bowers has the better arm though, and looks to be a bit more consistent about stepping into his throws. A lot of what they did today is going to go on film, where the coaching staff can evaluate the two better. Sonny did say during the press conference that the best time for them to develop even more would be during practices for a bowl game.
- Webb got to be the consummate teammate today, going around to the receivers during their drills together, talking with them about routes and running them from the QB perspective. He also did the QB footwork drills, complete with throwing the ball into the net left-handed, shovel pass style. It's refreshing to see someone care as much as Webb does
- The other big injury to come out of the Oregon State game was Chad Hansen's left ankle. He had a boot on, used the exercise bike, and did some work on the side with the strength and conditioning coaches. Vic Wharton appeared to see some time at the Z in his stead, with Patrick Worstell and Jack Austin getting reps as well. Wharton is getting to be the wide receiver version of Patrick Mekari, versatile enough to play pretty much any position.
- No Vic Enwere today, no word on what happened to him, but it'll be clearer on Thursday.
- Without any team sessions today, and most of the work for the offense and defense coming against the scout team, there isn't too much to report. Once they move into more preparation for the Oregon game, things will be a lot clearer.
