Cal's string of recruiting success continues, this time with the specialists as long snapper Slater Zellers committed to Cal this morning. Zellers received his offer back at the beginning of June, after going through Cal's specialist camp in Berkeley and impressing Charlie Ragle and Justin Wilcox. Zellers becomes the 13th member of the 2018 class for the Bears, and is listed at the top long snapper in the country by Kohl's Football Camps.
Zellers is as good as it gets as far as long snappers go. He's crisp, he's consistent, and he's well practiced at his craft, and he's worked with former Cal longsnapper Nick Sundberg in the past. Back in June, he had this to say about his Cal offer:
"I’m still going to wait for any other opportunities, keep my options open, but it’s looking good. Right now Cal is at the top," Zellers said, "I plan on making a decision very quickly, if nothing else comes about by the end of the month, I’ll make that decision. I wouldn’t sit on a power five school, it’s stupid."
It took a little bit longer than that, but Zellers will now add into a legacy of excellence at Cal in the longsnapper position, with Sundberg, LP Ladouceur, and David Binn (the patron saint of longsnappers) having long NFL careers at the spot coming out of Berkeley.
Zellers should solidify the longsnapper spot for the Bears over the next few years, a very good piece that they won't have to worry about for a while with him in the picture.
