Cal hired defensive line coach Jerry Azzinaro in January after his stint with the 49ers under Chip Kelly. Through a FoIA request, the details of his contract have been released to GoldenBearReport.com, and detailed below.

The Basics:

Azzinaro has a two year deal, much like fellow assistants Charlie Ragle and Marques Tuiasosopo, with the contract expiring at the end of February in 2019. Azzinaro's deal averages out to 300k per year, though the contract is more heavily weighted toward the second year.

Base salary for year 1: $100k

Base salary for year 2: $125k

Talent fee for year one: $161k

Talent fee for year two: $214k

Unlike some of the other coaches, Azzinaro did not receive a signing bonus, but has a retention bonus of $261k if he stays on the staff through July 1st of 2018.

Bonus Structure:

Same bonus structure as the other assistants, given that APR is over 930:

- Make it to the Pac-12 title game: $15,000

- Make it to one of the Rose, Fiesta, Sugar, Orange, Cotton, or Peach Bowls: $25,000

- Make it to the National Championship: $10,000

- Finish above 50% win percentage and make it to a bowl not named above: $10,000

- Finish below 50% win percentage and make it to a bowl not named above: up to $5000

If he's fired without cause before the end of the contract, 100% of the base salary, talent fee, and earned retention bonus will be paid out to him.

Takeaways:

Azzinaro is getting a healthy bump up from what counterpart Fred Tate was making a year ago with the Bears (225k). Many defensive linemen raved about Azzinaro's coaching this spring, so the new defensive line coach has been a welcome addition to the staff for a team transitioning to a 3-4.
