With head coach Justin Wilcox officially signed, he made the first known addition to his staff, bringing the longtime Oregon offensive line coach Steve Greatwood to Berkeley with him, reported by Comcast Sports Northwest reporter Aaron Fentress. Greatwood was not retained by new Oregon head coach Willie Taggart.

Greatwood replaces Brandon Jones, who was not retained in the coaching change, and his hire follows the decommitment of offensive lineman Casey Roddick.

Greatwood has over 30 years of coaching experience, coaching the Oregon offensive line for 23 of those years in two different spurts. Under him, the Oregon offensive line has had a great deal of success, becoming one of the most prolific rushing offenses after he retook the OL helm in 2005. At Oregon this past season, he held the title of assistant head coach and running game coordinator in addition to the OL duties.

Oregon's running game was 27th in the country in rushing yardage in 2016, a year after ranking 5th in the country in rushing yardage, total offense and scoring offense.

Greatwood's hire signals that the Bears may not shift to a pro-style offense immediately, but to one that runs the ball more often. Cal passed the ball on 60% of snaps last season, ranking 94th in time of possession while Wisconsin led the country in that category, and the general plan would be to control the ball more.

The 58-year old Greatwood is a graduate of Oregon, graduating in 1980 with a degree in sociology.
