Cal fans got a surprise this morning as Sonny Dykes' Twitter account put out a "Fight for California," signaling a new member of the 2017 Cal recruiting class. That new member is 2017 OL Michael Saffell from Edison High School in Huntington Beach. Saffell picked Cal over offers from Colorado State, San Jose State, and UNLV. He had received interest from other Pac-12 schools as well.

When Saffell talked with us in late July after his offer, he said that he would commit when the time was right. After an unofficial visit up to Berkeley with his mom for the Utah game and discussions with his family, this apparently was the time to do so. Saffell is the second recruit to commit after the Utah game, with Jordan Genmark-Heath committing on Sunday.

Saffell currently plays center for his Edison squad, and has been told by coaches that he'd either stay there or move to guard, though the chances seem better for him at center. With Chris Borrayo, Dominic Granado and Jeremiah Stuckey all leaving after this season, Cal needs more interior linemen, and Saffell fits the bill.

Saffell will fit right into the rigorous Cal academics, with his 4.2 GPA being a big selling point for the coaching staff, as well as his focus on blocking technique and aggression. Saffell is a three star (5.5 rating) offensive guard per Rivals.
