Powell kicks off all-star bowl slate

The high school bowl season is underway, which means 4-star Cal commit Lonny Powell is underway. The Sac High senior, who will be the Bears' only commit in one of the big three January bowls, participated in Saturday's 58th Annual Sacramento Bee Optimist All-Star Classic at Prairie City Stadium in Folsom.

Powell helped lead the South to a dominating 40-12 win, carrying the ball four times for 61 yards (15.25ypc!), including a 55-yard TD run in the fourth quarter. Powell also got some time on defense, finishing with four tackles despite a 40-player strong roster for the South and North combined.
"Really glad I played," Powell said post-game.
Powell nearly missed out on MVP honors, which went to the Sac-Joaquin Section's leading rusher in 2014, Trey Nahhas, who scored two 1-yard touchdowns and recovered a fumble.
South coach Mike Johnson raved about Powell.
"What a player and what talent," Johnson said.
Next on the all-star bowl docket for Powell is the January 4th Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl at the StubHub Center in Carson, CA, which will be televised on FOX Sports 1 at 6pm.
Powell, who's listed as a running back for the West squad, finished his senior season with 969 total yards of offense and 17 touchdowns. Defensively, he tallied 95 tackles, 36 TFL, and 22 sacks and was named the Metro League Defensive Player of the Year.
"I'm ready for the next step," Powell said.
Come February 4th, 2015 -- National Signing Day -- it'll finally be time for the 5'11", 205-pounder to take it.
