SAN FRANCISCO -- For the third week in a row, the Bear Republic Podcast welcomes a special in-house guest, and this time, we've got 2011 starting defensive end Ernest Owusu at The Republic in San Francisco.
Last season, Owusu played in 13 games with nine starts, registering 30 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss for 30 yards, 4.5 sacks for 25 yards, two pass break-ups, one quarterback hurry and one forced fumble.
After not being invited to the NFL Scouting Combine, Owusu broke out in a big way at the California football program's annual Pro Day, rattling off 39 bench press reps of 225 pounds, a 4.70-second 40-yard dash, a 30-inch vertical leap and a 9-toot-4 broad jump, opening the eyes of the NFL scouts in attendance.
Owusu talks about his Pro Day prep and his prospects for the NFL Draft in our first hour, and breaks down a bit of spring football with us as we review the first third of the spring practice schedule.

In our first hour, Owusu opens up about the differences between the defensive schemes of Bob Gregory and current defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast, and he details the emotional side of the 2011 season, and some of his memories about the individual games, both good and bad.
Quarterback Allan Bridgford has made a big impact thus far in spring, and Owusu has an up-close and personal scouting report of the man who may very well be thrust into the starting role over the first four games of the 2012 season.
It's been a big week in Golden Bear sports, and there's even more to come, as the No. 1 Cal softball team won its 26th game by beating Princeton 8-0 and the women's swimming team took home the NCAA swimming and diving championship. The softball team opens up Pac-12 play this weekend against rival Stanford on the farm, while the Bears baseball team heads down to Tempe, Ariz., for a three-game set with the No. 14 Arizona State Sun Devils in their second conference series.
In our second hour, Owusu gabs about his favorite memories as a recruit and as a player, so you don't want to miss that.
