Nicholas Edwards, former Eastern Washington WR Coach, to join Cal Staff

After adding two experienced names to the offensive staff in Beau Baldwin and Steve Greatwood, Cal has reportedly added youth to their staff, hiring the 27 year old Nick Edwards to be their receivers coach. Edwards was on Baldwin's staff at Eastern Washington for three years before heading south with Baldwin to Berkeley.

Edwards played for Eastern Washington for four years, starting as a sophomore in 2010 when they won an FCS title. He went from walking on with the Eagles to becoming an FCS All-American as a junior, catching 95 passes for 1250 yards and 19 touchdowns that year. He turned down an offer to play in the CFL for the opportunity to coach the wide receivers at his alma mater.

As a coach, Edwards has played a large role in the development of Cooper Kupp, the winner of the Walter Payton award (akin to the FBS Heisman) in 2015, along with four straight FCS All-American awards. Kupp also received two straight FCS offensive player of the year awards.

Edwards now has a lot of responsibility hoisted upon him, with the Cal receiver group having a ton of talent, but talent that may not be entirely molded. He'll have two returning starters in freshman All-American Demetris Robertson and Melquise Stovall, along with names like Vic Wharton and Brandon Singleton among others. While the Bears look to move to an offense that can run more frequently and effectively, Baldwin's teams at EWU racked up passing yards, and having someone that's been around Baldwin for that long can only help the receiving core get acclimated.
