Marquise Brown: On his Cal Offer and Development

Yesterday, Cal put out an offer to JuCo wideout Marquise Brown, one of three on the day for Brown, who received offers from Tulane and Southern Mississippi on the day. With another offer coming in today from TCU, Brown has added to his offers from Washington State, West Virginia, and Middle Tennessee.

“I’ve been talking to coach Jacob Peeler. He reached out to me about two weeks ago, and I got in contact with a few of their coaches," Brown said about his contact with the Bears. "Then today, he called me and they extended the offer.”

Brown came out of Chaminade Madonna College Prep in Florida, but didn't have any interest coming out of high school. “I was undersized in high school, and I’ve grown tremendously since then," Brown said about the lack of offers. He has grown since then, being listed as a solid 5'11" and 170 lbs.

Over his first five games at College of Canyons, Brown has put up solid numbers, with 20 receptions, 393 yards and 6 touchdowns so far this season. “My speed, I got a lot faster since high school, I got a lot stronger," Brown said on the specifics of his improvement. "I really improved on my blocking a lot. That’s one thing I’ve started taking pride in, and my route running has been better. I’ve upgraded tremendously.” It's certainly paying dividends, as receiving four offers in two days shows.

As for his goals for the rest of the season before transferring, Brown wants to make it to the playoff and become an All-American before transferring. Wherever Brown ends up going, he's eligible to come in in December, just in time to participate in offseason workouts before spring practice.

As for what he knows about Cal, Brown has this to say:

“I’m a big fan of Desean Jackson, so I watched him, when I was really little, at Cal. Ever since then, I’ve always paid attention to Cal. Being on the East Coast, I wasn’t able to catch a lot of games, but I do watch all the highlights of Cal when I get the chance.”

With the Bears looking to take another receiver in the 2017 class, Brown could follow in the footsteps of Jackson, should he so choose.
