The Boston Celtics have selected California freshman Jaylen Brown with the #3 overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft. "I honestly had no idea,” Brown said after being drafted so high. “I was sweating bullets over there. I'm glad I ended up where I am."
The last Cal players to go this high in the NBA Draft are Jason Kidd (#2 overall to the Dallas Mavericks in 1994) and Shareef Abdur-Rahim (#3 overall to the Vancouver Grizzlies in 1996). What’s even more amazing is that Jaylen Brown and Shareef Abdur-Rahim both went to Wheeler High School in Marietta, Georgia.
The fact that the 3rd overall picks in the 1996 NBA Draft and 2016 NBA Draft both played at Cal and went to the same high school is nothing short of incredible if you really think about it. Jaylen Brown was part of an historic 2015 recruiting class for Cal along with Ivan Rabb, who could have gone Top 10 in this year’s draft had he declared. Jaylen Brown makes history for Cal again by going so high in the NBA Draft.
As far as what is next for Jaylen Brown, it remains to be seen whether or not the Celtics will keep him or if they trade him as part of a deal. My personal feeling is that he will stay put in Boston. There was chatter about Boston being really high on Jaylen should they decide to keep the pick, so for now, I would assume that Jaylen Brown will be in a Boston Celtics uniform next season.
In terms of what Boston is getting in Jaylen Brown, they are getting a versatile, athletic wing that has the physical package of Dominique Wilkins. Jaylen is really tough to stop in transition and he can get after it on defense. Jaylen Brown needs to improve his shot and his ball handling, but he has all the physical gifts to be an all-star in the NBA and the face of a franchise.
