After filling out the majority of the offensive coaching staff, Cal has made their first hire on the defensive side of the ball (aside from hiring Justin Wilcox), bringing in Gerald Alexander as their new defensive backs coach. Alexander comes over from Montana State.

Alexander just finished his second year as a true defensive backs coach, his first in Bozeman after coaching the position at Indiana State in 2015. Alexander had also interned with the Buccaneers and the Titans before the 2016 and 2015 campaigns respectively. Alexander also worked as a graduate assistant under Jimmy Lake at Washington and at Arkansas State as well

Alexander has experience under Wilcox, playing on his Boise State defense in 2006 as a starter, the year the Broncos won the Fiesta Bowl against Oklahoma. Afterwards, Alexander went on to a five year career in the NFL, being drafted in the 2nd round of the 2007 NFL draft by the Detroit Lions.

Alexander's recruiting responsibilities at Montana State were LA county and Bakersfield, two areas that the Bears have recruited decently in recent years, but will need to step up on in addition to an increased focus on recruiting in the Bay Area.
