Curran ready to go
Just like a year ago, when soon-to-be Cal senior center Mark Gray verbally committed to the Bears, Woodland (Calif.) tight end Skylar Curran surprised many Cal fans with his mid-December commitment. The former Butte CC star, who stands 6-foot-4, 245-pounds, runs a 4.6 forty, and possesses a 36-inch vertical, went completely unnoticed during much of the recruiting process.
That changed quickly after his visit to Cal. Though its been just a little over a month since his official visit to Berkeley, and just over three months since he started being recruited by Cal assistant coach Pete Alamar, Curran has officially joined the program today as classes begin.

Curran will be one of Cal's two mid-year transfers, with the other being Florida transfer Nyan Boateng. Both will officially begin classes in Berkeley today in time for the spring semester.
"I am really excited about being at Cal," Curran said last night, leaving for Berkeley in the morning. "From the academics to being on the field with the guys, you know, it's just a great opportunity for me. How could anyone not look forward to playing at Cal? Just look at what they did in the Bowl game."
Curran, who has an enthusiastic yet cool personality, obviously spent part of December 28th watching Cal pummel Texas A&M, 45-10, in the 2006 Holiday Bowl. A big part of the offensive attack that night was junior tight end Craig Stevens, who actually hosted Curran during his official visit to Berkeley on December 8th. Stevens, who caught an extremely important 26-yard pass, combined with departing senior tight end Eric Beegun to open massive holes in the Aggie defense. That paved the Bears to the win, which included a 31-0 second half scoring differential.
By the account of the depth chart and his redshirt sophomore status, Curran should be able to get on the field immediately. Since he used his redshirt season two years ago after suffering a broken ankle in a Sacramento area prep all-star game, Curran has three years left to play three seasons.
"I want to play," Curran said, acknowledging his status. "I really love the game, and being on the field is important to me. I want to get as strong as I can, and just help Cal win every single game."
