Clays absence marks day two
BERKELEY -- The bumps and bruises of camp continued to show their faces on Saturday afternoon, as both speedy wide receiver
Kaelin Clay and veteran left tackle
Mitchell Schwartz were sidelined with various tweaks from
California's second fall session.
"Clay, we still need to do a test on him," said head coach
Jeff Tedford. "We're going to get an MRI on him, but we can't do that until [Monday]."
Tedford did not think that Clay's knee injury was anything serious, but at this point, the team isn't taking any chances with one of the fastest burners in the wide receiving corps.
"We don't know. Anything like that, we're going to take precautionary measures and get an MRI to make sure," Tedford said. "Schwartz did not practice. It's just a hamstring, but he's a veteran. He kind of knows when he's ready."
While laid up, Schwartz has been on constant watch with some of the younger offensive linemen, serving as an additional coach alongside
Jim Michalczik.
"He should be doing that whether he's playing or not," Tedford said. "But yeah, he does that."
In other camp news, Tedford said that the placekicking job belongs to
Giorgio Tavecchio.
"It's Giorgio's job right now," Tedford said, when asked if the job was Tavecchio's to lose. "We haven't done kickoffs yet, but as far as field goals are concerned, Giorgio is doing a good job there."
One player who's job is more than secure is
Sean Cattouse. The senior will slide over to free safety after starting all of the last season at strong safety, and playing in all 12 games the year before, with six starts.
"Communication, just solid play in everything that he knows," Tedford said of why he believed Cattouse could make the switch. "He played a lot last year, so he understands the game, plays fast, is very physical, had a really nice offseason, has built his body up and he looks really good."
Also on defense, Tedford said that weak side outside linebacker
Chris McCain is pushing for some time with the first string, and he's looked to have put on some muscle in the offseason, now looking not so much like a shooting guard as a power forward.
"They're really mirrored. They're not really a strong side or a weak side. They're really mirrored, but we've been playing him with
David Wilkerson on the strong side, but we'll see," Tedford said. "They can do both. If somebody trades the tight end or something, they can flip. They're trained that way. They're trained to play both sides."
Tedford also said that
Cecil Whiteside is seeing time with the ones on the outside, alternating with
Ryan Davis.
The Bears will practice on Sunday and Monday in shells, and then will put on full pads on Tuesday.
MORE CAMP NOTES
-- Former Cal linebacker Jarred Price was in the house. Looked like he'd been working out with Mike Blasquez.
--
Nick Forbes was still in red, but was lightly doing some of the drills.
--
Spencer Ladner was in work out shorts instead of street clothes, so he's moving closer to returning.
-- Kickoff returners included
Darren Ervin,
Mike Manuel (who's changed his number to 13),
Stefan McClure,
Daniel Lasco,
Brendon Bigelow,
Kameron Jackson and
Josh Hill.
-- A few roster notes: frosh OL walk-on
Zak Bieble has left the team, as have JC LB
Josh Atkinson and
Dash Oliver.
--
C.J. Anderson and Ervin: liked their hands and balance.
-- Tight end
Spencer Hagan showed good vision and body awareness.
Edmond has some of the quickest feet of the wide receivers, and with Clay down, looks to be in the top four at the position.
-- True freshman wide receiver
Maurice Harris catches just about anything that comes his way. Really plus hands.
-- Recruits were once again in the house.
Zach Kline,
Bryce Treggs,
Chris Harper and
Ishmael Adams were on-hand, with Kline sporting a Cal cap, and both Treggs and Adams sporting blue and gold Cal hoodies, respectively. The Bears are looking
very good for the four-star corner, and of course, the four-star wide receiver Treggs is already committed.
--
Jackson Bouza continues to show really good possession skills.
