Checking in with Chase Garbers

The beginning of Fall Camp beckons in Berkeley, so I caught up with Chase Garbers Sunday evening. Since the dust has settled following his commitment to Cal, Garbers has held steady in his commitment, preparing for his senior year at Corona del Mar and trying to recruit the future members of his team.

"There's a lot less stress," Garbers said, referring to his Cal commitment last month. Garbers became the (at the time) seventh commitment of the 2017 class, alongside two of his opponents in last year's CIF playoffs.

Garbers' Corona del Mar team faced off against Buena Park, home of future Cal wideouts Taariq Johnson and Jeremiah Hawkins, in a losing effort. When asked about what he saw from his future targets, Garbers responded that he was "amazed with those two guys, and I'm excited to throw to them next year," noting the size of Johnson and the shiftiness of Hawkins.

Unlike other Cal quarterbacks in recent years, Garbers said that he will not be graduating early. He said that this year is "one last hurrah with the guys, with the goal being to win the division, if not a state title." He's going to have a difficult time topping himself, after completing 68.7% of his passes for 2715 yards with 33 touchdowns, and taking home the PCL Player of the Year award for his efforts.

On the recruiting front, Garbers that he was, "in full on recruiting mode. I have a list of guys (that he's reached out) that are committing soon." The first names mentioned were big offensive linemen in Jackson Kirkland (set to commit August 14th), Casey Roddick (who just put Cal in his top 5), and Aaron Banks (who cut down his offer list Sunday). Also mentioned were RBs Najee Harris, Cam Akers, Biaggio Ali-Walsh, and DT Greg Rogers.

Sonny Dykes and company have to be happy with Garbers, considering he's doing part of their job for them. If he can help land any of the guys above, and other players on his list, then Cal coaches and fans alike will be happier to have Garbers en route to Berkeley in the Fall of 2017.
