On Wednesday, Chaminade, a Division II school out of Honolulu, upset Cal men’s basketball by a final score of 96-72 in their final game of the Maui Invitational. Chaminade senior guard Dantley Walker was the top performer for the Silverswords with 23 points on 7-10 shooting from 3-point range and 8-11 shooting from the field. Cal freshman Justice Sueing was the top performer for the Golden Bears with 23 points and 7 rebounds on 9-18 shooting from the field.

For Cal, this loss really stings. After having the #6 ranked Wichita State Shockers on the ropes in their opening game of the tournament, Cal leaves Maui with an 0-3 record, having lost to a Division II school. What started out so promising couldn’t have ended any worse.

“For me, in the years that I’ve been coaching, I’ve never been so embarrassed in my life from the lack of effort from our guys,” Cal head coach Wyking Jones said after the game. “So, for me, it’s about going back to the drawing board, myself and my staff, and figuring out what changes we need to make because there definitely needs to be some changes. So we just have to go back to the drawing board and figure that out, what changes we need to make. But there will definitely be some changes.”

The words from Jones say it all. Aside from freshmen Justice Sueing and Darius McNeill, nobody else showed up to play. The rest of the Cal team might as well have stayed back at the hotel and not showed up at all. They got out-worked, out-hustled, and out-played in nearly every facet of the game. The most pathetic stat of all is the fact that Chaminade out-rebounded Cal 42-36. Even with Marcus Lee once again getting into foul trouble, there’s not excuse for Cal to get beat on the boards like that. Their struggles on the boards are indicative of their lack of effort and willingness to play sound, fundamental basketball.

Going into this game, one of the keys was for Cal to go back to the basics and play a sound fundamental game for 40 minutes. They failed miserably at that. They didn’t move the ball well; they didn’t get back on defense, etc. There’s really no way to paint any sort of pretty picture from this game. It was ugly to watch.

Up next for Cal is a home game on November 28th against CSU-Northridge. After what we just witnessed, it’s no guarantee Cal wins that game. They’ll have to come out swinging and motivated to bounce back from one of the most humiliating losses in program history.
