Jorge Gutierrez found Bak Bak alone underneath for a 3-point play with 35 seconds left, putting Cal ahead 72-69. Bak then stripped Iowa State's (6-2) Diante Garrett driving through the lane and hit two free throws to put the Bears ahead by five with 27 seconds to go.
Iowa State's Jake Anderson missed the second of two free throws with five seconds left, and the Cyclones were unable to get a potential game-tying 3-pointer off.
Scott Christopherson scored 25 points on a sprained ankle for Iowa State, which trailed much of the second half before rallying in the final minutes.
The win put Cal coach Mike Montgomery two shy of 600 for his career-but the Cyclones made the Bears earn it.
After trailing for nearly 16 minutes, Iowa State tied it at 63-63 on Melvin Ejim's free throw with 2:42 left. Gutierrez followed a pair from the line by Kamp with a mid-range jumper from the wing to put Cal ahead 67-63 with 1:48 to go, but Christopherson came back with a 3.
Gutierrez calmly hit two free throws, but Christopherson banged home another 3, his seventh in 13 tries, to tie it at 69-all with 47 seconds left.
Gutierrez finished with 11 points and five assists, none bigger than his late feed to Bak, and Allen Crabbe added 11.
The Bears took control in the early going, and Gutierrez's 3 with 6:37 left in the first half gave Cal a 31-21 lead. Iowa State answered with a 12-2 run though, as Garrett snapped a transition pass crosscourt to an open Christopherson for a 3 that made it 33-all.
Iowa State came out sluggish to start the second half - a stretch typified by Anderson leaving a wide-open layup spinning on the rim-and Cal was able to jump back ahead 46-41.
Brandon Smith's open jumper put the Bears up 54-46 midway through a rather choppy second half. The Cyclones inched back within 58-56 with 7:23 left as Anderson drove the length of the floor for a 3-point play, only to leave Crabbe wide open for a 3 on the other end.
Anderson had 16 points and nine rebounds for Iowa State, whose fast start has quickly become a thing of the past.
Iowa State had its surprising six-game winning streak snapped Wednesday night at rival Northern Iowa, 60-54. The Cyclones had won their first six games by an average of about 25 points, but the slow-paced Panthers frustrated Iowa State's offense and outrebounded the Cyclones 41-30.
Iowa State battled the Bears on the board, but it had 12 assists against 17 turnovers and more than a few defensive lapses.
The Cyclones honored coach Fred Hoiberg by handing out replica No. 32 jerseys to students to wear during the game. Hoiberg's No. 32 was retired after he scored 1,993 points for Iowa State from 1991-95.
