Former Cal defensive backs coach Gerald Alexander had a saying, "long athletic corners if that's what you're into." That's something that Cal is into as his successor, Marcel Yates, has landed a massive target from Northern California. Kaleb Higgins, a defensive back from Folsom HS, has joined Cal's class of 2021. He joins Akili Calhoun on the defensive side of the ball in the class, and is the sixth overall commit for the Bears.
Higgins chose Cal over offers from USC, Oregon, and Washington among others, as he helps to continue the Bears' stellar start to the 2021 class.
Higgins visited for the February junior day, and he told Adam Gorney about his experience while attending the LA area Under Armour Camp
"I met coach (Marcel) Yates and he’s a great dude,” Higgins said in February. “I got up there and met the whole coaching staff. What really piqued my interest with Cal is the first four words to come out of coach (Justin) Wilcox’s mouth were ‘We focus on education,’ and that’s what I wanted to hear.
“It’s incredible to be able to go to a school that’s highly looked at for education and football. That’s what I’m looking for.”
Higgins will also get an opportunity to match up with his brother Elijah, currently a wide receiver at Stanford. The Higgins family moved to the Folsom area from Texas before Elijah enrolled at Stanford, and they'll now have the opportunity to see their sons compete against each other in the Big Game for years to come. Kaleb attended the Big Game in 2019, a last second 24-20 Cal win, and told Gorney this:
“I went to that rivalry game and that was a crazy experience. Being able to go to Cal and play against my brother would be incredible.”
Higgins is a tall corner prospect at 6'2" who can run with bigger wideouts, much like Chigozie Anusiem, capable in pursuit and in breaking on the ball. He has what Alexander called 'contact courage.'
Higgins is listed as a three star (5.5) athlete per Rivals, and his commitment bumps the Bears up to 23rd in the Rivals Team Recruiting rankings.
