Cal adds UCLA Transfer QB Devon Modster

Cal added to their quarterback depth Friday afternoon with the addition of transfer quarterback Devon Modster. Modster, previously at UCLA, spent this fall at Palomar College (not playing), and will be eligible to play next fall. He announced his transfer from UCLA back on September 21st before UCLA's school year began.

Modster was a redshirt sophomore eligibility-wise when leaving UCLA, so he'll have two years of eligibility left at Cal. Originally a member of the 2016 class, Modster was a four-star dual threat QB, rated as the number seven dual-threat in the country, and the 35th best player in the state of California (180th in the country), while coming out of Tesoro High School.

In his sole season of action at UCLA in 2017, Modster was 51-79 (64.6%) for 671 yards and four touchdowns, with no interceptions. His first extended action came against Cal in 2017, completing 14-18 passes for 191 yards after coming in in relief of Josh Rosen. He started the bowl game in place of Rosen, going 21-34 for 295 yards and 2 touchdowns in a 35-17 loss to Kansas State.

With the QB room looking relatively thin for the future, Modster provides much needed depth for the Bears and someone that can compete with Chase Garbers for the starting job in 2019.
