Over the course of spring and fall camp, Brandon Singleton emerged as a threat at the X position, climbing up the depth chart to a shared hold on the starting job. Singleton ended the spring game with a touchdown reception from Ross Bowers on a picturesque back corner route to give the blue team a victory.
Singleton, a redshirt freshman, saw his first action at receiver against Hawaii, recording two catches for 14 yards in his first start at the X. Singleton said that, “I felt pretty good, man. It was really exciting to get out in front of a big crowd, and just going out and focusing on one play at a time. Even though it was my first collegiate game, I felt really good.”
Admittedly, with Chad Hansen catching fire on the other side of the field, Singleton didn't have as much of an opportunity to make an impact as he would have liked, with Hawaii attempting to close down the perimeter in the second half to slow the screens to Hansen and the other outside receivers. Quarterback Davis Webb did mention Singleton as a guy who had a good day on film despite the lack of stats. When asked about how he would grade himself, Singleton said “I don’t know what kind of grade I’d give myself, I just focus on practice. Anything I do really, I just focus on taking it play by play and getting better everyday. It’s a great thing that he noticed, because I’m ready, I’ve been ready. I’m ready to show everyone what I can do.”
His readiness has been a factor in his move up the depth chart, showcasing his speed on a number of long receptions during fall camp. The connection between him and Webb has grown as well, Singleton saying “I think we had a really good fall camp together, so I think I’m really comfortable with him. I trust him, and I trust the decisions that he’s going to make. When he makes the decision to come my way, I’ll be ready.”
That comfort with an experienced veteran like Webb helped Singleton's own comfort and work ethic. “I’m feeling really comfortable, in fall camp the offense as a whole put in a lot of work," Singleton said, "I put in a lot of work on those timing routes, so I’m feeling good.”
Singleton will look to do more damage against San Diego State, much like one his predecessors at the position, Trevor Davis, did last season.
