Artis well on his way
With all of the big men at the Cal basketball team's two-day hoops camp last weekend at the Blue Gym of the RSF, you'd think it'd be hard to notice little 5-foot-10, 155-pound Dominic Artis. You'd be wrong.
The 2012 point guard prospect out of Vallejo (Calif.) Salesian was easily among the top points at the camp, and during team scrimmages on Saturday showed no fear when faced with significantly larger competition.

"If you don't go strong, you're going to get beat up," Artis said. "You've got to go down there with no fear."
With six seconds left on the clock in the final game, Artis picked up his own rebound, drove the baseline and laid it in for the win while surrounded by several 6-2-plus defenders.
"There's a lot of good competition out here, and everyone's going at it," Artis said. "It's been a good camp, overall. I learned a lot about using the pick-and-roll, knowing how to use it to attack the big guy, if he's sitting there, to pull up."
Going into his junior year, Artis has yet to receive his first scholarship offer, he is getting some looks, and hopes to start seeing the actual offers start rolling in.
While he is a bit undersized, Artis is plenty quick off the dribble, and plays bigger than his size. That, and boy, can he shoot.
"(Cal coaches) like that I can shoot," Artis said. "That, and moving guys around with passes, and I can see the floor, kind of like Jerome Randle."
Time will tell whether Artis can develop into that type of point, but judging by his performance at the Bears' camp, he's well on his way.
