It wasn't very long after Matt Anderson watched a 58-yard kick sail through the eastern Witter Rugby Field uprights that he walked into California head coach Jeff Tedford's office and heard the words very few high school kickers ever get to hear: You have an offer.
Just an hour and a half after that, Anderson called Tedford and said that, like his former Danville (Calif.) San Ramon Valley teammate Zach Kline, he was going to be a Bear.
"Fully scholarship," Anderson smiled. "I had lunch after [the camp] and I met with coach [Jeff] Genyk for about 20 minutes, then I took a tour of the campus, and my parents and I met with coach Tedford for about an hour, and he offered me during that conversation. I committed about an hour and a half later when I got home.
"I was very happy the past two weekends out there with them. I really love coach Genyk, and coach Tedford, as well, and it just seemed like a really good place that I want to be at."
Tedford was also on-hand during the kicking competition on Sunday, helping to field kickoffs in the east end zone and carefully observing the field goal kicking portion of the workout.
"Coach Tedford and I, were talking about the university and about the team, and I really liked his talk about how it's a family, and when he offered me, he said, 'You have a home here, at Cal,' and that resonated with both my parents and I. He just seemed like a down-to-earth coach," Anderson said. "I just enjoyed everything that he was talking about."
On Sunday, Anderson out-dueled Michael Geiger -- rated by various services at either the No. 1 or No. 2 kicker in the country. Two weekends ago, he out-dueled another No. 1/No. 2 kicker in Daniel Carlson out of Colorado Springs (Colo.) Classical Academy at the Cal kicking camp. To say the least, it's been a whirlwind for the scholar athlete, who boasts a 4.3 GPA to match his big leg.
"I think it was just the belief that they had in me, that I could succeed at their university, and they showed that to me throughout the past two weeks," Anderson said. "I got the tour of the campus later that day, and for all the years I've lived here, I've never actually toured the campus, and I really loved it. I just knew that was the spot that I wanted to be at."
Anderson had been set to attend UCLA's camp this week before heading to the Chris Sailer Top 12 in Los Angeles, but now, he only has to worry about one trip.
"I'll just be at the Sailer camp," Anderson said. "No need to go to the other one."
Anderson will come in as a field goal and kickoff specialist, but will also be in the running for backup punter. One of the first calls he made was to Kline.
"I did call Zach last night, and he was very excited," said Anderson. "We'll bring the long hair down to Berkeley."
