3-Star DB Chigozie Anusiem Commits to Cal

"Another one" - DJ Khaled

These words are quickly becoming the mantra of the Cal coaching staff as they landed a top target at defensive back in Sonora HS corner Chigozie Anusiem. Anusiem, a 6'2" corner, committed to the Bears today after a visit to Berkeley yesterday. Anusiem becomes the 12th commit for the class, after Miles Owens committed Friday and Will Craig and Evan Tattersall committed yesterday, making it four for the weekend

After Anusiem got his offer back in mid-June, a point that made him a main target for the Cal coaches was his size. He'll be the tallest corner for the Bears once he steps on campus, and with two experienced corners in Darius Allensworth and Marloshawn Franklin gone after this season, Anusiem should be able to insert himself into the competition for playing time at corner, though there is a lot of competition.

With his frame, Anusiem will be someone the staff will develop with press skills. DB coach Gerald Alexander, the main recruiter of Anusiem, has been teaching the quick jam techniques to his DBs, and now he'll have someone with a bit more length to do it. Anusiem has also shown some solid technique in turning and running with receivers, he has the speed to keep up and the length to make plays on the ball, scoring a number of deflections.

While corner isn't the biggest position of need at the current juncture, getting a guy like Anusiem, who's a bit underrated despite also having interest from Notre Dame and UCLA, is a great sign for Alexander and the rest of the coaching staff.
