2017 OL Poutasi Poutasi Commits to Cal

Cal gained their first commit of the Wilcox era today through offensive lineman Poutasi Poutasi, from Desert Pines HS in Las Vegas. The former Louisville commit decided to come to Cal after spending his weekend in Berkeley on an official visit, choosing the Bears after offers from Louisville, San Diego State, and Nevada among others.

Poutasi, who will most likely slot into one of the guard spots at Cal, got an offer from Cal while he was at the Polynesian Bowl in Hawaii a week and a half ago, and things progressed very quickly from there. Offensive line coach Steve Greatwood and QB coach/Passing Game Coordinator Marques Tuiasosopo traveled to Vegas for an in-home visit, and got him to come to Berkeley for the final OV weekend. It did help that Greatwood had a bit of cachet with the Poutasi family, recruiting cousin Sam Poutasi to Oregon a year prior.

Poutasi also has some experience with another one of Cal’s offensive line commits, Mike Saffell. The two played on opposing teams down in the Polynesian Bowl, but trained together at former 49er Jesse Sapolu’s Men in the Trenches program, an 18 week training course for prospective offensive linemen

These connections, along with getting Poutasi’s final official visit, sealed the deal for the Bears, as they needed another guard in this recruiting cycle after Casey Roddick decommitted.

Poutasi is a 3-star (5.6 Rivals Rating) offensive guard, ranking as the 32nd best guard in the country and the 10th best player in the state of Nevada.
