2017 DB Branden Smith Commits to Cal

The final commit of signing day came from defensive back Branden Smith, who much like his former and future teammate Melquise Stovall, committed to Cal late in the cycle. Smith committed quite a bit later, waiting until signing day to do so. The Landcaster product chose Cal over offers from UCLA, BYU, and San Jose State.

Here's what we wrote in our signing day thread about Smith earlier

"In what appears to be the final signing of the day, Cal has snagged the commitment of Paraclete ATH Branden Smith. Smith visited Cal over the weekend as well, meaning eight of Cal's ten visitors from the weekend have now committed to the Bears. In addition for playing both ways at Paraclete, Smith ran track, holding the school records for the 60 meters (7.04), 100 meters (10.67), 200 meters (21.57 wind aided), and as a part of the 4x100 team."

Senior Stats: 38 receptions, 317 yards, 1 TD

38 tackles, 4 interceptions, 11 pass breakups, and 1 FF

Smith has reportedly run the 100 meter faster than that reported time, according to Cal defensive back coach Gerald Alexander, who was his main recruiter. Smith was offered a week ago, visited over the weekend, and publicly made his decision today.

Smith was listed as a 3-star cornerback (5.5 Rivals Rating), and he will continue on as a cornerback at Cal under Alexander, who was happy to have someone with his speed on board.
