With Pac-12 Media Day in the books for the Bears, we take a look at the answers to our "Pressing Questions" and other takeaways from the day.
How long does he expect the QB competition to go?
Wilcox noted in a lunchtime session with the press that he expects the QB competition to be done by the time they play in North Carolina, though he didn't want to put an exact date on it. He also noted something that until now hadn't really been a concrete thought, that incoming freshman Chase Garbers will compete for the job.
From Wilcox:
"Chase Garbers is on campus now as a freshman. All three of those guys will have a chance to earn the job.
It's very competitive right now. We haven't named a starter. I don't know when that time will be. It will present itself when it does. We're excited. They've had really good off-seasons and they're all a little bit different. All those guys will have the opportunity to earn the right to play."
Tre Watson also commented that Garbers had looked great during summer workouts, along with new wideout Jeremiah Hawkins.
Garbers having a shot at the job is a new wrinkle, since he has the arm talent and accuracy, something he showed in spades leading Corona del Mar deep into the playoffs. In the end, it's likely that it'll be one of Ross Bowers or Chase Forrest, but the former 4-star QB getting a shot bodes well for Cal's future.
What's the status of Brandon McIlwain?
McIlwain will be ineligible this year in accordance to transfer rules, according to Justin Wilcox. It was a bit of a prayer anyway, but that's been concretely confirmed.
Other transfers in Valentino Daltoso and Gerran Brown are immediately eligible however.
How do they fill the vacated RG spot?
Wilcox noted that the best five linemen will play, keeping it close to the vest in terms of who that might be. Right now, Semisi Uluave would appear to be that fifth guy, but there was no hint as to which direction Wilcox is looking.
How will the injured/absent players from the spring fit in?
The injury list struck a blow this morning, with Evan Rambo and Zeandae Johnson out, along with Daniel Juarez and Billy McCrary also out for the year. In the case of the others, like Demetris Robertson, Luc Bequette, Trey Turner and Melquise Stovall among other, they'll be expected to take on big roles on the offense and defense.
What are the expectations for the defense going into camp?
This was Wilcox's quote from the transcript that relates:
"We'll have a different style of defense. We'll be a 3-4 defense, different coverages played. We have a lot of experience coming back, especially on the front seven.
We also feel really good about guys that are going to step up and take on some bigger roles. We feel like the transition throughout spring was really good, picked up the system very fast. It's a smart bunch of guys, and they're eager to get back on the field and continue to learn."
There is a higher level of expectation in the past, going with the upgraded attention to detail in technique and the coaching of it.
Other Notes
- Justin Wilcox was confused for a player by Arizona lineman Luca Bruno
- Wilcox noted that last month's visit by Aaron Rodgers was pretty spontaneous, with Rodgers asking if Wilcox was in the office, Wilcox responding affirmatively, and away they went
- Wilcox apparently does not own a TV, nor does he watch Game of Thrones, as his resemblance to Jaime Lannister (credit to Luc Bequette here) was noted during the day. He said he did some research and saw that he wasn't the most savory character to be compared to. Looney is a big fan of Game of Thrones, Tre Watson hasn't watched any
- The full class of 2017 will be in Sunday without a hitch, checking in for fall camp
Fall camp starts on July 31st, with an open practice to start the festivities, where a lot of questions will start to be answered.
