Aquinas offensive lineman Jasper Friis joined Cal's 2018 class on Monday, getting the Bears off the offensive schneid in recruiting. The German born offensive lineman told the staff he was committing on Monday, but had the decision in mind for a couple of weeks beforehand.
“I really liked Cal for a long time, but the final decision was when I went to Germany on spring break and talked with my family about this," Friis noted "We agreed that it would be the best decision to commit to Cal.”
Monday ended up being the right day for Friis to commit, with offensive line coach Steve Greatwood coming down to the school for the day.
"I knew that coach Greatwood would come over to my school to talk and I wanted to tell him in person that I wanted to commit," Friis noted, "Then after I told him, he told me that I should call the head coach, Then I announced it in the evening after that.”
Currently, the 6'7", 300 lb lineman is out for the spring with an injury (he'll be back for the summer), but he had been working on his game before that at skills camps during the spring.
"For the skill camps we work on a lot of basic things, little things that really help to improve your game, for example how you can be more agile as a lineman," Friis said. "I think it has really helped me to improve footwork and other fundamental things so I can get prepared. It was a really good experience."
For now, Friis is focused on getting back to playing, but as far as recruitment goes, he's set at the moment.
"I would say I’m done," Friis said about his recruitment process. "I’m really happy that I had the opportunity to get offered by Cal and I would say it was a perfect fit for me, so I would say I’m done.”
