Justice Sueing and Grant Anticevich Officially Sign With Cal

Cal announced the signings of two more members of the 2017 class, adding forwards Justice Sueing and Grant Anticevich to the group, joining the already signed Juhwan Harris-Dyson and Trevin Knell (who is reclassifying to the 2019 class due to his LDS mission). Cal currently has three of their six scholarship spots for the class of 2017 filled.

Sueing, a 6'6" forward from Mater Dei, helped his squad to the CIF Open Division finals, leading them in scoring by averaging 18.2 points per game. Sueing committed to Cal on February 1st after a visit to Berkeley, and will bolster a lineup that will be in need of scoring options after losing Jabari Bird, Grant Mullins, and Ivan Rabb

From the team release, Justice "plans to attend medical school and become an orthopedic surgeon when his basketball career is over."

Anticevich, a 6'8" forward from Sidney, Australia, comes to the Bears from Newington College, where he was an all conference selection and team captain the past two years. He committed to Cal on March 1st after a visit as well, and he has the ability to stretch the floor with his shooting ability, while showing potential in the post.

“Justice is a versatile wing who can score in a number of different ways and impact the game on both ends,” Jones said. “He has a great feel for the game and comes from a program in Mater Dei that has a tradition of players that have gone on to have success in college and beyond.”

“Grant is a skilled post player who excels away from the basket with his ability to shoot and his exceptional passing,” Jones said. “He too has an unbelievable feel for the game and high basketball IQ.”

Takeaways:

Cal will still need a lot to fill out the remainder of the 2017 class, which will probably come from grad transfers and otherwise, but Sueing and Anticevich will be solid pieces for the 2017-18 season, Sueing especially, as the Bears struggled last year with their offensive aggressiveness. Sueing is an uncanny driver, a left-handed wing player with a toolkit of crafty moves to get to the bucket. Don Coleman is the only player on the roster currently with that penetrating skillset, and getting another player who can do that, and finish at the rim is extremely helpful. Sueing does it with size, which is something that the Bears need on the wing.

There's not a lot of film out there on Anticevich, but on what there is, his 6'8" listing is correct. Anticevich has the shooting ability from midrange and from deep, passes well with his size, and can get inside, but how he adjusts to college competition and how well Jones' coaching staff does with him will be paramount to his success. He's been a solid player in Australia, from what the accolades show, and he's considered a D1 player, judging from his recruitment by Georgia Tech and others. It'll be up to him to prove it, and Jones and company think he can.
