For the third time in three recruiting cycles, the California football team has gone into the state of Georgia and pulled a defensive back to the West Coast, as three-star corner Trey Cheek pulled the trigger late Monday night.
"Oh, yeah, I just committed to Cal just a minute ago," Cheek said at around 8 PM Pacific time. "I just got done talking with coach [Ashley] Ambrose."
Ambrose and Cheek have a long history together, as the Bears' defensive back coach was the first to ever offer the 5-foot-10, 175-pounder.
"That conversation went well. It went really well," Cheek said. "I'm excited about it, too. I always wanted to come to Cali, and my dream came true. My family and I just agreed on it. They're the No. 1 public school, so hey, you can't beat that.
Cheek becomes the third defensive back Cal has pulled from Georgia in the past three years preceded by hard-hitting safety Avery Sebastian, a four-star US Army All-American in 2011, and 2013 commit Shon Akins. The ever-affable and outgoing Sebastian has been one of those players Cheek has kept in touch with during the recruiting process.
Cheek committed to the Bears, sight-unseen, but has been enamored with Cal for quite some time.
"I've been doing a lot of research," he said. "I've been looking at the campus online. That's all I do. I look at the Cal highlight videos, I look at their campus and everything. I'm actually coming out there on April 21, for the spring game, and stuff, to take my visit. I'm very excited. I just feel comfortable."
In light of last cycle's home-stretch drama, Bears fans should take heart in the fact that Cheek is as committed as they come.
"I'm not going anywhere," Cheek said. "I'm a man of my word. Once I commit, I commit. I'm not changing anything. Now I can just focus on school and have nothing to worry about."
Stay tuned for more on Cheek's commitment.
