Wilcox, Browning watch DE target Frederick Williams II ahead of Cal visit

GARDENA, California — College head coaches are only allowed to leave campus and recruit during select portions of the year. So, when a college head coach turns up at a high school game during the season it is significant since he doesn't have many opportunities to do so.

Friday night, Cal head coach Justin Wilcox spent one of the last days of his team's bye week to make the trip down south to Los Angeles where he checked in on a few of the Bears' key targets in the 2023 class.

Gardena-Serra squared off with La Puente-Bishop Amat in a big Mission League matchup Friday, and Serra features two prominent Cal targets in the current class while Bishop Amat's defensive line is guided by current Bears commit Tiu Afalava.

So, Wilcox had plenty of reason to be on the sideline at the game. He was joined by defensive line coach Andrew Browning, who also had great interest in the matchup. While Afalava is already locked in with his pledge, Browning and the Cal staff continue to work to add a commitment from Serra edge rusher Frederick Williams III.

The three-star prospect picked up an offer from the Bears during the summer while on an unofficial visit, and he is set to make his return to Berkeley later this month on an official visit with the program.

Williams used his first official visit on a trip to Boston College in the summer, so the Bears are in rare company when it comes to earning one of his five official trips.

It is shaping up to be an important visit for the 6-foot-5 defensive end as he pushes forward toward eventually making a commitment before the end of the year. The Bears have been among the most active programs in his recruitment this fall with Washington, Colorado and Oregon State being some of the other schools in the mix.

Williams has had an opportunity to build a strong connection with Cal's coaches since getting on campus with the Bears in the summer, and he's happy with how the relationship has progressed heading into his next visit.
