Whiteside was dismissed from the team on May 24 due to an unspecified violation of team rules. That breach, according to several sources, was related to academics.
Whiteside was reinstated to the team before the start of fall camp, having apparently made amends and done the work needed to regain the staff's trust -- no easy task.
However, once in camp, Whiteside saw very limited action. When he did see the field in full team situations, he was relegated to the third defense.

Last season, Whiteside played in 10 games, making 17 total tackles, tallying three sacks, four tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and one pass deflection.
"Cecil was one guy, and he really hasn't been practicing with the first group at all," Tedford said. "He was academically ineligible after the spring semester, so all the other guys have had an opportunity to play in there. With Brennan Scarlett being back -- Brennan's doing a great job -- and [Chris] McCain is playing well. We feel good about those two guys at the outside backer position. He really hasn't been in the plans."
Tedford did say, however, that Whiteside remains with the team, likely in order to take advantage of the program's academic resources.
