Satin gets the call

Another product of the California baseball program has finally made it to the Major Leagues.

Late Wednesday night (after midnight on the East Coast), infielder Josh Satin became the 10th Golden Bear to make his way onto a Major League roster this year, getting the call up from the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons to suit up for the New York Mets.

Satin said in a text to BearTerritory, "I'm fired up."

The 26-year-old southern California native and product of Harvard Westlake started the season at Double-A Binghamton, where he hit .325 with 11 dingers in 94 games. After being called up to Triple-A Buffalo, Satin hit .317 with one homer in 38 games.

After earning first-team All-American honors from Baseball America, Satin was picked up by the Mets in the sixth round.

Satin is the second Cal product to make his MLB debut this year, following fellow 2008 draftee David Cooper, who was called up earlier in the season to play with fellow Cal alum Brandon Morrow on the Toronto Blue Jays. Whispers around the league say that Cooper will also get a Sept. call-up after hitting over .370 with Triple-A Las Vegas.

2009 first-round draft pick out of Cal Brett Jackson could also wind up getting the call for the Chicago Cubs as the 11th Big League Bear this season. The Cubs are reportedly very, very high on the athletic outfielder's speed and bat.

After an early strained oblique sidelined Oakland Athletics righty Tyson Ross, he's spent the past month and a half of the season with Triple-A Sacramento, but figures to be back up with the big club next year.

Speaking of the A's, the green and gold just traded another David Esquer product, Conor Jackson, to the Boston Red Sox.

Outfielder Allen Craig is hitting .317 in 54 games with the St. Louis Cardinal,s with six HR, 28 RBI and five stolen bases thrown in for good measure during his second big league season.

Craig expressed his excitement at having "another Cal Bear in the show," when he heard the news of Satin's call-up.

Catcher John Baker is almost through his rehab recovering from elbow surgery, and is on track to make it back to the bigs for the Florida Marlins in September.

Geoff Blum of the Arizona Diamondbacks has been sidelined since late July with a fractured pinky finger, but he recently went went 2-for-3 with an RBI single Monday in his first minor league rehab game with the AZL Diamondbacks, while also played five innings in the field. Barring any setbacks, he should be ready to return this weekend against the San Francisco Giants.

Last but not least, outfielder Brennan Boesch is following up his Rookie-of-the-Year-runner-up season with a solid season, playing in 115 games so far for the Detroit Tigers, scoring 75 runs, slugging 25 doubles, mashing 16 home runs, driving in 54 runs and hitting .283. Boesch and Satin came into Cal together as recruits after playing on the same team at Harvard Westlake.
