SAN FRANCISCO -- This week, it's time to break (down) some Trojans, as the California football team heads into Los Angeles to face No. 12 USC.
In our first half hour, BearTerritory staff statistical analyst Robert Kenneth Clampett, publisher Ryan Gorcey and CBS Sports Pac-12 blogger John Breech review the good and the bad from last Saturday's 35-28 loss to Ohio State in Columbus. We debate the merits of going for it on fourth-and-one, senior quarterback Zach Maynard's big day and the coming-out party for sophomore tailback Brendan Bigelow, among other topics.
Then, we turn our attention to the Trojans, who are coming off of a 21-14 heartbreaking loss to Stanford in their Pac-12 conference opener. What challenges do the Bears face in quarterback Matt Barkley and his bevy of big playmakers? Will the USC offensive line be at full strength? How can Cal exploit the soft spots, which the Cardinal were able to expose?
On the other side of the ball, we ask how the Trojans are different from the Buckeyes in their defensive looks, and what kind of coverage the Bears can expect to see from the USC secondary, which, despite being fourth in the Pac-12 in interceptions, is eighth in the conference in passing defense and seventh in passer efficiency defense.
At the end of our first hour, we detail some non-football-related items, including some of the latest recruiting news from the Cal basketball and baseball teams, as well as the performances of two former Bears baseball players in the 7-3 Team Israel win in the World Baseball Classic Qualifying Tournament over South Africa.
We kick off our second segment with an exclusive interview with Team Israel hero and former Cal catcher Charlie Cutler, who took some time out of preparing for Friday's 10 a.m. PST game in Jupiter, Fla., against Spain to do a 10-minute spot for the Bears faithful.
Wrapping up our second segment, we give you some updates on just who Mike Montgomery's staff is going after, following the recent commitments of Jabari Bird and Jordan Mathews. We conclude the podcast with some big baseball recruiting news, as David Esquer's program picked up a huge commit in 2013 catcher John Riley, and then we give a rundown of the rest of the 2013 class. As always, we finish with predictions for this weekend's tilt with USC, and dole out some Bear Fights, so sit back, grab a brew and listen to all the fun.
