SAN FRANCISCO -- This week, we're joined by San Francisco native, Pittsburgh Pirates farmhand and former California baseball catcher Charlie Cutler, fresh off of a World Baseball Classic Qualifying Tournament run with Team Israel to talk about his experience down in Jupiter, Fla., with former Bears teammate Josh Satin, and to talk a little Cal baseball in our first segment of the Bear Republic Podcast.
We talk everything from David Esquer's program to the Cal baseball alumni weekend coming up to the current Major League playoffs, which feature former Bears in Oakland Athletics manager Bob Melvin, Detroit Tigers outfielder Brennan Boesch, San Francisco outfielder Xavier Nady and St. Louis Cardinals slugger Allen Craig.
After the break, we get down to some pigskin, breaking down what the Cal football team did well against UCLA last week, and what they'll need to improve on if they're to come out of the Pallouse this weekend with a win.
In the second half hour of our second segment, we break down what makes the Washington State defense tick, and where the soft spots are in that defense which the Bears have to exploit.
How much will the Cal running game be a factor against the No. 7 rushing defense in the conference? What do the Bears have to do to ensure its success? What about the tight end game? How does a healthy Richard Rodgers change the look of the Cal offense?
In our closing moments, we talk some recruiting. Which top 2013 and 2014 stars were on the field to witness the big win over the Bruins, and what did they think about the visit weekend? Listen for some free tidbits, and read more in the links below to get the full story.
To finish out this week's edition, we have a few notes on the Cal basketball team, which starts practice this Friday without injured guard Ricky Kreklow, but with a healthy and motivated Allen Crabbe.
What official visits are on tap for Mike Montgomery and his staff? Find out in our final 15 minutes!
