According to California head coach Jeff Tedford, sophomore outside linebacker Cecil Whiteside has been reinstated, as originally reported by CBSSports' John Breech.

"I think that he understands what he needs to do to be a good teammate and comply with everything we do as a team," Tedford said at Bay Area College Football Media Day on Monday.
Whiteside was dismissed from the team on May 24 for "violating team rules." The violation, according to sources, was academic in nature.
Whiteside will contend with Chris McCain, Brennan Scarlett and Dan Camporeale for playing time this season.

Whiteside has apparently made amends and done the work needed to regain the staff's trust -- no easy task.
Last season, Whiteside played in 10 games, making 17 total tackles, tallying three sacks, four tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and one pass deflection. His reinstatement adds to an already-very deep outside linebacking corps that is expected to be one of the most dependable units on the team going into the 2012 season.
