Stovall is rated as a the #3 all-purpose back in the class of 2016 by Rivals. He is a 4-star (5.9) prospect and becomes Cal's highest rated verbal commitment of the class. Additionally, Rivals ranks Stovall as the 26th best prospect in the state of California and the 149th best in the country.

Stovall chose Cal over offers from twenty other programs, namely finalists Utah, Arizona, Boise State and Notre Dame. He took his official visit to Berkeley, his fifth and final, two weeks ago.

In Stovall, Cal is getting a versatile offensive weapon. Though rated by Rivals as a running back, he will primarily play slot receiver at Cal. He will still be given some carries out of the backfield, and compete as a punt and kick returner as well. At 5'8" and 180 pounds, Stovall provides the Cal offense with a home run threat that they didn't necessarily possess previously.

Melquise Stovall becomes the 23rd commit in Cal's 2016 recruiting class. Inside Receivers Coach Jacob Peeler was his primary recruiter.
