Defensive Lineman Justin Kakala Commits to Cal

The defensive side of the ball is a definite focus under a defensive coach, and that was made apparent Saturday evening, as it was announced that Manteca defensive lineman Justin Kakala is committing to Cal, after committing to the coaching staff during his Junior Day visit. Kakala is currently unrated by Rivals, and holds an offer from Colorado in addition to his Cal offer. Kakala is the third defensive lineman in this class to commit to Cal in the last month along with JH Tevis and Nick Alftin.

Kakala joins a 2018 class that is in need of size up front. At 6'4" and 270 pounds, he seems poised to do that, with Tony Mekari, James Looney and Rusty Becker leaving after the 2017 season. Kakala has the ability to do so, playing both ways for his Manteca team at guard and defensive lineman. As a junior, Kakala recorded 56 tackles, with 10 tackles for loss, along with 11 sacks. He also blocked a punt against Los Banos in the playoffs, returning it for a touchdown. He played a big part in getting Manteca to a Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV championship.

Kakala has a strong swim move off the snap, and he has good pad level, which helps him get off of blocks. He moves well in space after getting off of blocks as well, leading to a number of sacks. He'll still need to work on developing his hand work and another move to go with the swim, but having one down is a good first step. As long as he can continue to occupy space and improve his hands, he'll be a solid fit for the Cal defense.

Kakala is also the younger brother of Louisville women's basketball signee Loretta Kakala, who was a McDonald's All-American this year.
