A group that needed good news got some, as Wyking Jones and company welcomed their first commit under the new staff, point guard Deschon Winston from Birmingham (Lake Balboa, CA). Winston will join Juhwan Harris-Dyson, Justice Sueing, and Grant Anticevich, as a team in need of a point guard got one.

Winston, a 6'3" guard, took the helm of his Birmingham team after transferring from El Camino Real, sprouting up from 5'7" as a freshman, and leading Birmingham to a City Section Open Division title over Birmingham in March.

From Birmingham coach Nicholas Halic, the Bears started looking at Winston after he had a monster game against another Cal recruit earlier this year

"Coach Jones began recruiting him when he was an assistant since he had a huge 43 points game on 17-22 shooting against Heritage Christian in January."

Heritage Christian was the school of Harris-Dyson, and the future teammates went off for a combined 79 points as Winston's squad prevailed 110-105. Winston averaged 18 points a game this year for the Patriots.

Winston will step into a role where ample playing time is available. With the loss of Charlie Moore, who announced a transfer to Kansas yesterday, Winston will have the ability to claim early playing time at the point guard spot, likely competing with Brandon Chauca and Don Coleman for time.

A point guard with a bigger frame, Winston shows the ability to shoot from anywhere, make solid passes, penetrate and finish at the rim, and is a solid rebounder for his size. Coach Jones has stated that he wants to play a more uptempo, transitioning scheme, and Winston can fit into that well.

Cal still has more spots to fill in the 2017 class, but getting the first one to come after upheaval is a breath of fresh air for the program.
