Source: Greg Burns will be hired as new Cal DB coach

According to a source, one-time USC defensive backs coach Greg Burns will be tabbed as Cal's new defensive backs coach. After a nearly month-long search, Burns will replace Randy Stewart, who was let go back on January 8th along with defensive line coach Barry Sacks.

Burns, who most recently served as the DB coach at UMass, was an assistant under newly crowned Super Bowl champion Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll for three years from 2002-2005, plus has done other Pac-12 stints at Washington State (1996) and ASU (2008-2011).

In between, Burns was also a defensive backs coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2006.

During his 17-year coaching career, Burns has made stops at eight college programs in all and coached the likes of Troy Polamalu, Darnel Bing, Antonio Roundtree, and Ronde Barber.

A four-year letter winner himself at Wazzu, Burns earned All-Pac-10 honorable mention honors in '92.

A formal announcement was expected Tuesday afternoon.
