Galas unlikely to get sixth year

BERKELEY -- Following emergency appendectomy surgery on Saturday afternoon, California senior offensive lineman Dominic Galas is out for at least two weeks, and possibly as many as four, according to head coach Jeff Tedford.
"He's being released today, and I think he comes home tomorrow [Monday]." Tedford said on Sunday. "That's anywhere from a two- to a four-week recovery."
Galas played against Stanford two weeks ago, but on Friday night, experienced severe abdominal pain, before undergoing surgery on Saturday. Galas had been sidelined for much of the season due to a torn right pectoral muscle suffered in July, after missing all of spring football due to a shoulder labrum surgery.
"For someone who's so passionate about the game and cares so much about this team and is such a hard-working guy, he's had one thing after another that's been really unfortunate," Tedford said.
Before it was determined that Galas would play against the Cardinal, the staff researched whether it would be possible for Galas to be granted a sixth year of eligibility, but now, after Galas has played in a game, whether or not he gets a sixth year is even more in doubt.
"We'll look into it. We asked that earlier, and we were told it didn't look good, so that's why he tried hard to get back to play right now," Tedford said. "I don't know the circumstances. I have to ask compliance about exactly what that is, but we were told, I guess there's cases that have been before, and his is similar to those that didn't have a positive outcome."
There is an outside shot that Galas would be able to play the season finale against Oregon State on Nov. 17.
"There's a possibility they say he could be ready for the Oregon State game," Tedford said. "There's a possibility. You've just got to watch out, depending on how the incision heals and all that type of thing."
