PAC-12 COLUMN: Bears Control Their Own Fate

PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) -- Faisal Aden scored 24 points to lead Washington State past California 77-75 Saturday.

Davonte Lacy of Washington State (11-8, 3-4) hit a 3-pointer, was fouled and missed the subsequent free throw to give the Cougars a 77-74 lead with 18.3 seconds remaining.

With six seconds left, sophomore Justin Cobbs of California (16-5, 6-2) hit the front end of a pair of free throws, but missed the second. Senior Bears guard Jorge Gutierrez grabbed the rebound and flung a shot that hit the front of the rim to seal the Cougars' victory.

WSU had four players finish in double figures, including Brock Motum with 15 points.

Cal had five players in double figures. Gutierrez led the Golden bears with 19 points. Four Bears played at least 30 minutes, with only 29 minutes coming off the bench. Junior point guard Brandon Smith saw action for the first time since suffering a concussion against Oregon State, playing 10 minutes and recording one assist and one steal off the bench. Thursday's hero -- forward Robert Thurman -- played 17 minutes with four points, three boards and one assist.
