Cal Practice Notebook: Goff deals, depth chart coming

High-energy Assistant HC Rob Likens -- usually the most vocal coach on the field -- stepped it up a notch today, compared to his everyday self. His voice could be heard, despite music blaring from the CMS speakers, from about 40-50 rows up on the west side of the stadium. Likens' enthusiasm provided a needed spark throughout an efficient shells-only (helmets & shoulder pads) practice that needed even more of it.

Head Coach Sonny Dykes said the practice was "...alright. We didn't have the same kind of intensity as we had yesterday... but I thought overall it was a good day. We did a few things that were different from a game preparation standpoint. So there's always a bit of an adjustment. But I thought it was fine."

Coach Dykes added -- to keep the team physically and mentally energized -- Saturday's practice will be light, and Sunday will be a planned day off. He also noted that the team will practice at 1230pm PST every day next week, to get acclimated to the 230pm CST Northwestern game kickoff.


The brisk pace of today's 2-hour practice provided an additional benefit: plenty of time for extensive special teams work. The punt and kickoff coverage units received special attention from ST Coach Mark Tommerdahl and Likens.
