UCLA Week: Tuesday Cal practice notebook

So how does one prepare to face one of the best -- if not the best -- defenders in the country in outside linebacker Anthony Barr?

Well, if you're LT Freddie Tagaloa you run with both the first AND second team offensive lines -- like he did at practice on Tuesday -- plus get a little creative when it comes to simulating Barr and his 4.4 40-yard-dash speed.

"We had some of the running backs rushing off the edge yesterday," Tagaloa said following practice.

The big man said Barr's speed in particular makes him a challenge.

"For sure, especially for a guy my size."

Tagaloa's Tuesday double duty came just two weeks after his starting job was called into question.

"That's something I needed," he said. "You become complacent. I think Sonny Dykes for that."

Cal's punt-returning contingent -- which's now headlined by Chris Harper who said during the mid-day presser he'll be the No. 1 returner from here on out -- got one-on-one work after fielding punts against four oncoming tacklers: Christian Okafor, Geoffery Gibson, Donovan Frazer, and J.D. Hinnant.

If you can dodge an OL, you can dodge an... actually good ST tackler?

WRs Kenny Lawler and James Grisom both got time with the 1s at outside wide receiver.

Grisom has caught five balls this season, THREE of which have been for touchdowns.
