Q&A with five-star Jalen Ramsey on flipping to Florida State

Warchant.com caught up with five-star cornerback Jalen Ramsey to discuss his decision to flip from Southern Cal to Florida State just a few days before Signing Day.

The Rivals100 member is the No. 3 corner and No. 10 player overall for the 2013 class. Ramsey was also a U.S. Army All-American and is the top rated player in the state of Tennessee.

Warchant: When did you start considering Florida State?

Ramsey: I started considering them as soon as Coach (Jeremy) Pruitt got the job. I was the first person he called, so from that point on I started considering Florida State.

WC: How long have you known Coach Pruitt and what is that relationship like?

Ramsey: I've known him ever since I took my first visit to Alabama for my unofficial visit (in September). We met him there and we didn't even know, but he and my dad had went to the same college together (Middle Tennessee State) and things like. From then the relationship has just grown.

WC: How much was his success with defensive backs at Alabama a factor in your decision?

Ramsey: It was big because I know what he's producing and what he can do on the field. I really trust him. With that we talk so long about pass technique and stuff like that so he really he showed me that he's a guy that knows what he's talking about. He's done it with some of the best with Coach (Nick) Saban and I just really have trust in him and he can do it on his own now.

WC: Did you know during you official visit to Florida State that it was where you would end up?

Ramsey: No I didn't. To be honest I still had no clue, but I reminisced on it, it was a good trip. I came back off it better than I expected and just tried to go slow with the process. I finally knew about Sunday night. I finally knew that Florida State was the place I wanted to go.

WC: When did you tell the coaching staff?

Ramsey: I called (Coach Jimbo Fisher) Monday. He was pumped up. At first we were just talking, still talking about stuff, he asked me a few last questions and I was just like 'Well Coach I'm in. I'm coming to Florida State.' Then you could just tell. He paused and then he had a sigh of relief and he was just excited. He was like 'Man you just made my day. That's the best news I've heard today.' He had a lot of excitement and I did too. I was excited to be a part of that and he just kept telling me 'Welcome to the family. All your dreams will come true at Florida State and we'll get the best out of you and you'll get the best out of us.'

WC: You're a decathlete and a good long jumper. Will you be able to do Track & Field for Florida State?

Ramsey: We actually start this week coming up. That is a big factor. I'm going to be able to run track and jump for Florida State, which is intriguing because they're also a National power in track. That was important for me. I'll be long jumping and doing the decathlon again this year, 400m, 200m, things like that. Hopefully I'll be able to defend all my championships from last year.

WC: Do you know the other football/track guys at FSU like Marvin Bracy, Ronald Darby, and Kermit Whitfield coming in?

Ramsey: Yes sir I do. They're extremely fast. I know what they can do.

WC: Are you hoping to be a guy that comes in and contributes right away?

Ramsey: I'm going to do what I have to do to make sure that I can be on the field and contribute right away. In any aspect I can, so we can win our conference championship and hopefully a BCS National Championship.
