2013 prospect respects BC tradition

Brendan Mahon is one of several top junior linemen from the east coast that have received early verbal offers from Boston College. It could be a big year for the Eagles at the position if BC plays their cards right and Mahon is one guy to keep an eye on.

The 6-foot-5, 305-pound tackle from Randolph, New Jersey, has great athleticism for his size. In fact, he plays both ways for Randolph. While Mahon believes most schools will be recruiting him as an offensive tackle, he believes his athleticism will cause some schools to leave the door open to defensive tackle. Of course, they could also flip him to the other side of the ball once he arrives on campus.

Thus far Mahon has picked up offers from Boston College, UConn and Rutgers, so that qualifies him as one of the most highly regarded Northeast linemen from 2013.

This past year Mahon was able to make it to a couple of the schools that have offered.

"I visited Rutgers and UConn," he recalled in a recent interview. "The UConn visit was during the season and I went to Rutgers for their junior day a couple of weeks ago.

"It was nice at Rutgers for the junior day. They were practicing for the bowl game so I got to see how all their coaches coach and just their style of coaching. It was nice to see that."

Though Mahon wasn't able to make it to BC that shouldn't be interpreted as a lack of interest on his part.

"I definitely still have interest in them especially because of their history with linemen," he said. "That's a really big deal for me. Plus, education-wise it's a great school.

"The biggest thing for me is probably going to be the coaches and their style. That and just the quality of people I'll be playing with. I don't want to be around 'me, me, me,' players. I want people willing to play as a team to win bowl games and national titles," he concluded.

It was a tough season for Randolph, who finished with a 4-6 mark on the year. Nonetheless, Mahon feels like he improved on his pulls and trap blocks significantly.
