October 25, 2010BERKELEY-The Pac-10 conference announced today that Cal's true freshman phenom Keenan Allen earned what is sure to be the first of many Player of the Week awards, this time as the conference's top special teamer.
Allen had a banner day on kick return last Saturday, amassing 100 yards on two returns, including a 39-yarder in the first quarter to set up the Bears' first score and a 61-yarder in the third quarter. Allen's second return would have been a 97-yard house call were it not for an ill-timed block in the back by Tyre Ellison that called the play back to the Arizona State 46-yard line.
"I think we all understand he's capable of it," said head coach Jeff Tedford of Allen's dynamism on returns. "Kick returns are a little different than playing receiver, so he had to get a feel for that, but he did a nice job of staying in-bounds right there. He was tight-roping, and Keenan's very strong. He's a big guy, and he can run well. He made a guy miss and he cut back and bounced off another guy to stay in-bounds. He's a strong guy."
Allen piled up 140 all-purpose yards on six catches and a rush, to go along with his two kick returns against the Sun Devils.
