Less than 24 hours after a clandestine meeting with Cal coaches, one-time Arizona commit Tony Mekari was sold on Berkeley.
"After we got back, I stayed up all night talking to my parents, my coaches, and just praying," the 6-3, 260-pound defensive tackle told GoldenBearReport Tuesday evening. "Cal is just a better fit for me."
Owner of a 4.00-plus GPA, Mekari liked what he heard during his visit with a Cal academic advisor.
"I guess you could say I'm undecided, but I'd like study either pre-med or business."
He's also a believer in doing things the right way, as evidenced by his notifying the Wildcats first.
"Out of respect, I called Arizona first, then I called Cal and told 'em I'm a Bear."
Added Mekari, "The coaches said I'll have to opportunity to compete right away, but Cal has great athletes there already, so I know it won't be easy."
The only thing left to do, says the Westlake product, is "take a visit out there in a couple weeks with my parents so we can enjoy it a little more. We only stayed one night and it's been pretty crazy."
Though he hasn't nailed-down an exact date just yet, Mekari's sure about one thing.
"I only slept like two hours last night, so now that I've made my decision, I can get some rest."
